MUSIC MATTERS

A recent study conducted at the Chinese University in Hong Kong showed that music lessons significantly improved the ability of children to remember a list of spoken words. The lead researchers believe that studying music serves as a kind of cross training for a section of the brain involved in language skills. The research also concluded the longer the student studied music, the greater his or her verbal memory improvement would be. Scientists predicted this effect because the brain's center for verbal memory is in a region known to be enlarged in people who've had musical training.
